12 pins and irregular PCB

The green giant has published an interesting video entitled “The Remarkable Art and Science of Graphics Card Design”, dedicated to the RTX 30, and in it has confirmed several important details about its next generation of graphics cards for the general consumer market.

According to NVIDIA, to achieve very marked jumps in performance, without major sacrifices in terms of efficiency, it is necessary to combine a series of keys that include aspects such as:

Experience and mastery at the level of architecture. Thermal and mechanical advances. An electrical design that allows to settle all of the above. Also a cost-viable product level design.

With the RTX 30, NVIDIA claims to have made significant improvements that will allow a very marked generational leap. In the attached video we can see that leaks that we had seen a few months ago are confirmed, such as the use of a 12-pin power connector, which will be compatible with adapters with two 8-pin to 12-pin connectors, and also the PCB irregular.

A look at the keys to the RTX 30 through NVIDIA’s vision

On a thermal level, the new RTX 30 uses a cooling solution optimized for maximize air flow, which has also been redesigned to overcome existing restrictions and move more air through the system. This enables more powerful and efficient cooling to be achieved.

In terms of mechanics, NVIDIA has integrated a more solid structure that includes a new low profile spring that makes room for a rear deck. With regard to electrical management, an issue of great importance, the green giant has opted for a compact electrical design that uses, as we know, a new 12-pin power connector. This connector is more compact, allowing more space for other components and the cooling system, and it is compatible with 8-pin connectors.

We now turn to design, and in this sense NVIDIA has highlighted the use of «cohesive and uncompromising design which adopts a revolutionary thermal solution while harmonizing every element of the graphics card.

In the video we can also see multiple images of both the new GPU and a part of the design that will be used by the RTX 30, but unfortunately the information we can extract from them is practically nil. In any case, the video is very interesting, both for the historical information it contains on the different generations of NVIDIA and for its marked technical nature.

I remind you that, if all goes according to plan, the presentation of the RTX 30 will take place on September 1. NVIDIA could limit the presentation to the RTX 3090 and RTX 3080, two graphics cards that will have, respectively, 24 GB of GDDR6X and 10 GB of GDDR6X. We still do not have official data on its performance and we do not know the price, but according to the latest information la RTX 3090 will be up to 40% more powerful than the RTX 2080 Ti and will be around 1,400 euros, while the RTX 3080 could be in the range of 1,000 euros.
